To gain a better understanding of English Premier League [EPL] club’s transfer needs we have conducted an in-depth analysis of the activity over the last 5 years.
Summarising the findings the following data has been sought looking at every transfer into the EPL from the previous 5 seasons (Summer 2006-Summer 2010) and each respective transfer window.
Geographical Analysis
A geographical breakdown of player nationalities can be seen with Europe being the main source of player acquisition and 34% of all players recruited from the home countries.

Further analysis of players recruited into the EPL highlights the breakdown by Nationality.
The table (below) lists the Top 10 with English and French being the most common. Brazilian and Argentinean are the most popular from Latin America and Senegalese the highest of any African nation.

Sources of Recruitment
The top 10 leagues where EPL teams recruit players is detailed in the following graph. Over the last 5 seasons 48% of players recruited into the EPL have come within the top 3 leagues in England with 32% being made from one Premier League club to another. The main European leagues of France, Spain, Italy and Germany have contributed 20% of players into the EPL.

Transfer Trends
The cumulative number of transfers has dropped over the last 5 years and the trend is that the ‘big 5’ leagues are being used increasingly more for player recruitment by EPL teams. ’With increasing wage demands and a challenging economic environment, clubs appear to be more selective with their player acquisition, further emphasizing the importance of a diligent recruitment process.

The trend line also indicates that the ‘better’ teams are buying fewer players, but potentially players of a higher standard/value and who are coming from the ‘big 5’ leagues.
