With the often frenetic activity that coincides with the January transfer window, Prozone’s Performance Analysis Centre has looked at historical trend data to give you an insight into the player trading activity.
The 2010 January transfer window saw the trading of just 38 players into the Premier League, a figure lower than any other point in the previous 4 seasons.
Increasingly the proportion of loan signings has grown significantly in recent years peaking in January 2010 at 42% and exceeding financial transfers for the first time in January 2010.

It is well documented the ‘top 4’ clubs are the biggest spenders in the transfer market but they still lag some way behind the promoted teams when looking at the total number of transfers during the January transfer windows.
Historically the top-4 teams have recruited the least in the January transfer window with those in the bottom half of the table making the bulk of the transfers.

Increasing wage demands and a challenging economic environment mean clubs appear to be more selective with their player recruitment. Clubs in the bottom half of the table are relying more and more on loan and free signings as a way of strengthening their squad in the latter stages of the season, further emphasizing the importance of a diligent recruitment process.
Prozone’s Performance Analysis Centre can assist with bespoke research projects to aid clubs and scouting departments gain a better understanding of the recruitment landscape.
